By the Act of Nature Protection 2009, april 11 has been established as a National Day of Nature Protection, in order to raise public awareness about the importance of preserving nature of Serbia.
Nature Protection Day was celebrated in the Botanical Garden Jevremovac in Belgrade by the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia, Public Enterprise “Srbija” and the Institute of Botany and Botanical Garden “Jevremovac”, Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade.
The Botanical Garden Jevremovac contains plant fund of more than 1,500 species grouped in geographical and ecological units, which make this space “the lungs of the city center”.
Serbia represents one of the 158 centers the world’s biodiversity, with large number of different types of habitat. The best preserved and most important parts of the natural heritage were declared as protected areas and now has 463 of them and make the 6,53% of the territory of Serbia.
